When the laughter of loved ones echoes in our memories, it's a treasure unlike any other. Dr. Amy Hughes joined us to share how she's ensuring those echoes never fade by capturing the essence of her patients through legacy videos. Her heartwarming stories remind us that joy and humor still have their place amidst the solemnity of life's final chapter.
Dr. Amy Hughes is a medical oncologist with Mission Cancer + Blood in Des Moines, IA. With 15 years of experience in oncology, she is deeply aware of the challenges a cancer diagnosis creates. She has dedicated her career to helping patients navigate these hurdles gracefully and empathetically. She was a Hospice volunteer for many years before her medical career and is also a certified death doula.
Dr. Hughes noticed that often, she was seeing patients facing the end of life with a great sense of anxiety and fear about leaving loved ones behind. This experience, in combination with her own personal losses, led her to found the 501c3 non-profit Amadora Legacy Project, with a mission to create lasting gifts of love by capturing the life stories on film of those with life-limiting illnesses. She feels passionate about normalizing the conversation around end-of-life, removing the stigma, and encouraging ALL people to be prepared because none of us know where life will take us.
Navigating the end-of-life journey requires a special kind of compassion, which our guest possesses in abundance. Her touching insights into guiding individuals and families through the transition of death evoke a profound respect for life's fragility. It's not just about confronting mortality; we're talking about embracing it, understanding the choices, and breaking down the stigmas that often shroud this most natural part of our existence.
Finally, our hearts are full of gratitude for the medical caregivers who sustain their empathy in the face of dwindling support. Dr. Hughes' narrative is a testament to the resilience and generosity of those who extend their care beyond the hospital walls, finding solace and purpose in non-profit endeavors. This episode illuminates the undeniable strength and spirit within the medical community and the profound messages of life's true value from those who witness its end.
