A 61-year-old Uber driver, Loletha Hall, lost her life after being shot multiple times by 81-year-old Ohio resident William Brock in front of his home. The incident, spurred by a scam call targeting both individuals, led to Brock facing a first-degree felony murder charge.
According to a statement and incident report from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Brock surrendered himself to authorities on April 10 following an investigation into the incident. Law enforcement officials revealed that additional charges may still be pending against Brock.
Before Hall arrived at Brock's home, Brock had already received a scam call. The caller, posing as a court official, threatened Brock and demanded money.
"Mr. Brock received some scam call by a person purporting to be someone from our courts who informed him a family member was incarcerated and that he had a bond of a significant amount of money," said Lt. Kristopher Shultz of the Clark County Sheriff's Office. "The calls turned from 'I'm an officer in the court' to 'We have this subject hostage, this is a ransom demand.'"
Investigators determined that Uber had dispatched Hall to pick up a package from Brock’s house, believing the assignment was legitimate. It was not. The same scam caller had also targeted Brock earlier that morning, falsely pressuring him for money in a scheme involving a purportedly incarcerated relative.
The incident report stated, “Ms. Hall, unfamiliar with the circumstances which had occurred, arrived and made contact with Mr. Brock.”
Despite Hall making no demands, Brock escalated the situation by seizing her phone and refusing to let her depart. The encounter spiraled into violence when Brock shot Hall multiple times during a struggle near her vehicle. Only after the shooting did Brock call 911, claiming he had been receiving threatening calls throughout the morning.
During the 911 call, Brock admitted to shooting Hall, initially claiming he aimed for her leg and shoulder. However, investigators later revealed that Hall had sustained three gunshot wounds, while Brock himself suffered injuries to his ear and head during the altercation.
In response to the incident, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into the proliferation of scam calls targeting Ohio residents and urged extreme caution, particularly among senior citizens.
As legal proceedings unfold, Brock's attorney has yet to state the case. Court records indicate Brock could face up to 15 years in prison. After posting a $200,000 bond, he was released from custody pending his next hearing, scheduled for April 22.
