We’re entering the holiday season, with cold nights spent by the fireplace, more downtime to read, or perhaps get into our kitchens and try that new cooking or baking recipe. It’s a season of gatherings, getting together with friends and family who might have been too busy traveling all summer for us to catch up with. We might be hosting dinners in our houses, or attending parties at the homes of others. We’re eating comfort foods, richer dishes, and perhaps baking treats to give as gifts.
Today the book I’d like to suggest to you is Table for Seven, by Whitney Gaskell. It came out in 2013. It’s a “chick lit” book with a bit of romance, but it’s not a romance novel.
I love the idea of hosting a regular dinner party club (or a cookbook club, which sounds really fun but like a lot of work too). The premise of the book is that a dinner party club forms after Fran and Will host a successful gourmet dinner party on a New Year’s Eve. They served a different course each hour leading up to midnight. There’s an immediate mention of The French Laundry Cookbook, cherries jubilee and white chocolate raspberry creme brulee tartlets - you might want to have a snack on hand while reading this book.
Fran and Will go on to form the Table for Seven Dinner Party Club. Over the next year, each member of the dinner party club is going through a different challenge. Fran and Will’s marriage is tested, Audrey is a young widow learning how to start her new life, Jaime suspects her husband is having an affair, Coop is a committed bachelor who might be falling in love, etcetera. Each member of the club finds their lives changed in some way. The book describes the monthly menus served at each dinner party, so foodies may enjoy this read.
