×Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has cast doubt on Russia’s willingness to agree an initial 30-day ceasefire in the war in UKraine, laying down a string of conditions that will be hard to meet. Mr Putin said he agreed with the idea of a ceasefire in Ukraine but had "many questions” about the proposed US-brokered ceasefire. The Russian leader suggested that Ukraine should neither rearm nor mobilise and that western military aid to Kyiv be halted during the 30-day ceasefire. Ukraine has already agreed to the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in talks with the United States. President Volodymyr Zelensky described Putin's response to the plan as "manipulative”. US President Donald Trump said it would be “very disappointing” if Russia refused to agree to the ceasefire. The US has placed further sanctions on Russian oil, gas and banking sectors. Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by James Landale, Jonathan Beale, Sarah Smith and Jeremy Bowen. It's the latest escalation of a global trade war, which this week has ramped up with 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium entering the US. The EU responded to the steel and aluminium tariffs by saying it would raise its levies on up to €26bn ($28bn; £22bn) worth of US goods, including boats, bourbon and motorbikes, from 1 April. 1 From Mexico's drug cartels to US streets - the deadly Fentanyl trade killing thousands | BBC News 8:01
President Trump says he’s imposing tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China in part because they’re failing to prevent the smuggling of the synthetic opioid fentanyl into the United States. Fentanyl is used in medical settings for pain relief but when it’s abused the drug is deadly. Fentanyl killed more than 70,000 Americans in 2023 alone. Most of it is made in Mexico and smuggled across the border into the US. Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Quentin Sommerville and camera-journalist Darren Conway. A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém. It aims to ease traffic to the city, which will host more than 50,000 people - including world leaders - at the conference in November. Police in South Africa are "hot on the heels" of the suspects behind the killing of Muhsin Hendricks, dubbed the world's first openly gay imam, Deputy Justice Minister Andries Nel said. The 57-year-old was in a car when he was shot dead in broad daylight in the coastal city of Gqeberha on February 16 2025. The imam was well known for his work in creating a safe haven for gay and other marginalised Muslims and his killing shocked the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. This video replaces an earlier version, which mistakenly featured images of The Open Mosque, Cape Town - which is not connected with Muhsin Hendricks. The European Union says it will impose counter-measures on €26bn (£21.9bn, $28.3bn) worth of US goods in response to President Donald Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminium. Mr Trump's tariffs, which came into effect overnight, mean that US businesses wanting to bring steel and aluminium into the country will have to pay a 25% tax on them. He hopes the tariffs will boost US steel and aluminium production but critics say it will raise prices for US consumers and dent economic growth.
