Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is preparing to launch his first orbital rocket into space on Sunday with his space company Blue Origin. The launch at Cape Canaveral in Florida marks a major milestone for Blue Origin as it competes with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and the New Zealand firm Rocket Lab - both of which are already running missions for Nasa and others. The spacecraft, named the Blue Glenn in honour of the first American to orbit the Earth, John Glenn, has taken a decade to perfect. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has cast doubt on Russia’s willingness to agree an initial 30-day ceasefire in the war in UKraine, laying down a string of conditions that will be hard to meet. Mr Putin said he agreed with the idea of a ceasefire in Ukraine but had "many questions” about the proposed US-brokered ceasefire. The Russian leader suggested that Ukraine should neither rearm nor mobilise and that western military aid to Kyiv be halted during the 30-day ceasefire. Ukraine has already agreed to the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in talks with the United States. President Volodymyr Zelensky described Putin's response to the plan as "manipulative”. US President Donald Trump said it would be “very disappointing” if Russia refused to agree to the ceasefire. The US has placed further sanctions on Russian oil, gas and banking sectors. A Nasa-SpaceX mission that aimed to clear the way for two "stranded" astronauts to get back to Earth has been postponed. The rocket aimed to fly four new crew members to the International Space Station (ISS) and pave the way for the return of Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore. The captain of the Solong cargo ship arrested after a collision with a tanker in the North Sea is a Russian national, the ship's owner has confirmed. Humberside Police said the 59-year-old man remained in custody after being arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. Armed militants in Pakistan's Balochistan region have attacked a train carrying more than 400 passengers and taken a number of them hostage, military sources said. Police in South Africa are "hot on the heels" of the suspects behind the killing of Muhsin Hendricks, dubbed the world's first openly gay imam, Deputy Justice Minister Andries Nel said. The 57-year-old was in a car when he was shot dead in broad daylight in the coastal city of Gqeberha on February 16 2025. The European Union says it will impose counter-measures on €26bn (£21.9bn, $28.3bn) worth of US goods in response to President Donald Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminium.
