Lourdes Ramirez, a community advocate and land use expert, joins me to discuss the County's illegal action to approve Mega Hotels on Siesta Key. We look at the August 2021 Planning Commission meeting, where Mega Hotels were first illegally recommended. County Commission Candidate Teresa Mast recommended approval, and we listen to her remarks. Ramirez successfully sued Sarasota County and reversed this decision, whch would have opened the door to hotels that are 6.5 times bigger than what is currently permitted on Siesta Key.
Overdevelopment of Sarasota County has impacted the land's ability to absorb heavy rains, as we've seen with the devastating flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.
