Episode #188: Are you able to thrive in uncertainty?

I had lunch with a group of successful investors this week.

One of them asked for my views on the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, in the context of the Ukrainian-Russian war that is now entering its third year.

My friend knew of my Hungarian background and my work as President in Melbourne of the Australia-Hungary Chamber of Commerce.

He was very certain that what Russia was doing in attacking Ukraine was wrong. And, that what Ukraine was doing was right. He was upset that Prime Minister Orban had been blocking EU funding of Ukraine.

How certain are you about such matters?

Are you able to thrive even in the midst of uncertainty when you are uncertain about such matters?

Let me give you some more examples of such matters.

• Are you certain that doctors always act in your best interests when they are considering your health?
• Are you certain that Russia and China are evil and that the United Kingdom and the USA are good?
• Are you certain that the science on anything is settled?
• Are you certain that the experts are right that the planet has a climate emergency?
• Are you certain that increasing the CO2 level in the atmosphere from its current .04% to .08%, a doubling, will have catastrophic impacts on our planet?
• Are you certain that pharmaceutical companies are honest in their research?
• And, so on.

You get the picture?

I'm not certain about any of those matters that I raised.

However, I am able to thrive in the uncertainty of not taking a certain black-and-white position and I urge you to be able to live in this uncertain space.
