A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO!

Wednesday, October 6

Hey kids, it's Wednesday, the 6th day of October. It's National Mad Hatter Day. It’s apparently a day to just let your silly side shine! Yep. And I guess with or without a hat...either way seems okay here! It all comes from the character called the Hatter (also known as The Mad Hatter) from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Written by Lewis Carroll in 1864, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865. And by the way, the phrase “mad as a hatter” comes from the late 18th and early 19th centuries when haberdasheries used mercury nitrate in the process of turning fur from small animals into felt for making hats. The exposure to this metal over time caused the these people to develop symptoms making people believe they were mad. So, now you know that! And Happy National Mad Hatter Day to you!

Well, if today, happens to be your birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you! Someone else who was born on this day is a man named George Westinghouse, Jr. He was a pioneer in business and industry AND an inventor of some really cool things that have greatly helped America and the world. Oh, and by the way, as I was doing a little research about him, I saw dozens and dozens of pictures of him...and out of dozens and dozens of pictures of him, NOT ONE had him wearing a hat...you know, for whatever that’s worth. But, George Westinghouse, just like everybody else, started out as a child who at first knew NOTHING. But as he grew, just like you are doing, just like I did, just like all of us, he studied...he learned...and through hard work and goal setting, he contributed GREATLY to making life easier for nearly everybody. And, of course, we have a Beginning of a FAMOUS Hero story about him. It’s called The George Westinghouse Story, and it starts right now.

Play: The George Westinghouse story.

Drums out...

And there you go! Another perfect example of what is known as The American Dream! George Westinghouse had a talent for figuring out and even inventing machinery to do specific jobs. But, you know, that really didn’t make him special. What DID make him special is that EVEN AS A CHILD, he began to recognize that talent in himself, and he worked on that talent and developed that talent to the point that his TALENT began to serve him, and it began to serve those around him, and eventually it served the whole world. Now, YOUR talent may not be in machinery, or business, or industry, but I can assure you that you DO have a special talent, or perhaps a group of talents that...IF you discover them, and work hard on developing them, they will take you FAR as well. Just some things to think about on this Wednesday morning.

Well, just ahead, another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future. Comin’ up shortly on this Wednesday edition of TCN Mornings.

But right now, let’s talk about how we might provide these stories for YOUR school! You know, over the past 22 years, these stories have been played during morning announcements in hundreds of schools around the country. Each story is about 2-minutes in length, and they are typically played twice a week. A story from the Beginning of a Hero series on Tuesdays and a story from The Beginning of a Famous Hero Series on Thursdays. If you think YOUR school would like to participate, just have your Principal or Counselor write to jim.lord@TCNmornings.com. Or go to TCNmornings.com and click Membership. Also, and we’ve been talking about this, you can now download the TCN Mornings Mobile App! It’s available for both Apple and Android. All you have to do is search TCN Mornings in Google Play or the App Store. AND, it’s totally free, so get yours today!

Well...It's time once again to visit the memory of My Old Irish Pappy, and as always, there's not a day that goes by that I don't remember something my Pappy taught me. I can just hear him now with the advice he would give...

Dream transition.

Pappy quote...

That’s right! You’ll never know what you can do until you try. So many times, we convince ourselves that we just simply can’t do something...whatever that something happens to be, when the reality of the matter is that we’ll never know what we can or cannot do...until we try! Good advice as usual from My Old Irish Pappy.

Start bumper up and under...

And...here we go with the QUESTION OF THE DAY! O...kay. We talked about George Westinghouse in the beginning, and among the MANY things he invented (that was actually NOT mentioned in the story) was something known as a Railroad Frog. So, here's the question...it has two parts: What is a railroad frog and what does it do?

If you know, email your answer to MYANSWER@TCNmornings.com. Tell us your first name, your city and state, and of course, your answer, and the first correct answer will be featured right here TOMORROW. That email address again is MYANSWER@TCNmornings.com.

Oh, and the answer to yesterday's question: Where was Bohemia and what is it called today...that question was correctly answered by Lucee from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Lucee said that Bohemia was an area in Central Europe, and today it is known as the Czech Republic. Spelled

C-Z-E-C-H Republic. So, if that’s new information for you, look it up and learn something about the Czech Republic. Oh, and thank you Lucee for that answer!

Okay, one more quick segment ahead, but as for ME, I will see YOU...tomorrow for the Thursday edition of TCN Mornings right here on The Character Network.

Closer.

Dear Parents,

After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials

This program, The Beginning of a Famous Herois used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment.

These two sets of stories work together to convey a common academic language which says, “A bully is a person who hurts others on purpose (even if it’s just hurting their feelings) but a HERO is a person who HELPS others. So CHOOSE to be a HERO by HELPING instead of a bully by hurting.”

They also promote the concept of POSITIVE PERSONAL VISION, helping each student to realistically visualize his or her own "Future Self," and in doing so help relate consequences of actions and attitudes today (good or bad) to that future self.

It is the spaced repetition of these principles that makes the program effective. It is the 100% turn-key presentation that makes it easy!

This program takes VIRTUALLY NO TIME (only 4 minutes a week!) away from classroom instruction. But it also provides a common language across the entire campus when teachable moments occur!

The TCN Method has been extraordinarily successful in the past, in almost a thousand schools all across America, from California to New York, with a special concentration all over Texas, where The Character Network is based, and has been used to the benefit of well over a million students across the past two decades.

Then Covid struck, with the majority of schools ceasing in classroom instruction altogether for the majority of the previous school year, and after years of successful growth, we found ourselves in the very difficult situation of having to rebuild almost from scratch. So we started a morning podcast to help make the principles and teachings of TCN available to kids to have at home… but we need help from parents like you to get the word out, and also to help us gather financial support to once again make the method available again to not just the schools we lost due to Covid, but to every school and every child who could benefit and needs this going forward.

We invite you to become a coworker with us on our mission. Please start by visiting us at www.Patreon.com/theCharacterNetwork and considering becoming a sponsor for this work, and then dropping us a line at info@thecharacternetwork.org so we can learn more about you. Thank you so much!
