Saiswaroopa Iyer holds an MBA from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and has worked as an investment professional before turning to her passion for storytelling. Her love for the epics, Puranas, and philosophy made her become a full-time author. She has written five novels, Abhaya, Avishi, Mauri, Draupadi, and Rukmini, all based on strong female characters from the ancient past of India. She also holds a certificate in the Puranas from The Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, University of Oxford, England. She runs a mentorship program for aspiring novelists and is also a Carnatic Classical singer. She lives in Bengaluru.
In this episode we talk about how Saiswaroopa Iyer began with her writing journey & why all of her books talk about Krishna, we also discuss Hinduism & patriarchy, nuances of Mahabharata & also about how Queen Vishpala of the Rig Veda is given the first prosthesis in recorded history, an iron leg. The leg-givers in question are the Ashwins, horse-headed twin gods who fly around in a gold chariot handing out presents, healing the sick, and making it change from day to night.
