Many thanks to Marilyn Wooley, Ph.D., for joining me on The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner. Dr. Wooley is a psychologist and traumatologist who works with first responders. She is the author of “How Heroes Heal,” a book that discusses the extraordinary experiences of first responders that can result in debilitating post-traumatic stress injury and even suicide.

Based on her many years of experience treating thousands of first responders who have faced extraordinary stressors, Dr. Wooley noticed patterns of debilitating symptoms that result from trauma on the job. She observed that symptoms of traumatic injury in first responders can resemble those experienced by soldiers in wartime. Sufferers may experience emotional distress due to fear, guilt, and shame resulting from perceived failure on the job. Inappropriate fight-or-flight responses may plague the individual.

Over the years, Dr. Wooley has identified helpful treatment strategies to treat these symptoms, leading to “post-traumatic growth” rather than emotional and physical disability. By embarking on a “Heroes Journey,” sufferers can work through their experiences and come out stronger at the end. “How Heroes Heal” offers inspiration and hope to first responders, their colleagues, and families.
