The popularity and success of "Creep" and the associated debut album Pablo Honey cast a very long shadow on Radiohead. They started their career in popular music very early and gained worldwide fame out of the gate. For a while, it seemed like it worked for them. They continued to put out good music and continued to play amazing shows to gigantic crowds. But the longer they remained in the rock machine, the more that Radiohead, and Thom Yorke in particular, became disillusioned with it. Yorke was dealing with some intense anxiety and after years of touring and making what he thought was the right music, he didn't feel connected to any of it. He became very lost and sought out any other music but rock. This resulted in the band very nearly breaking up, and then coming back together stronger than ever, but changed. In Kid A, they make drastic changes to their sound, creating landscapes of electric sounds and moods, and great use of samples. Thom Yorke channels all of his anxiety and frustration into this and Amnesiac, and it's a therapeutic experience to listen to.
