Listen to excerpts from the new opera by Evan Ziporyn, “A House in Bali” on this New Sounds. The work is based on the memoirs of Canadian-American composer Colin McPhee who first brought the sounds of gamelan-influenced music to the west.
The live-cinema performance (now at Brooklyn Academy of Music) re-imagines McPhee’s wanderings in Bali, his encounters with anthropologist Margaret Mead and painter Walter Spies, and their ultimately tragic relationship with dancer I Sampih, a Balinese youth whom McPhee mentors after the boy saves his life. Ziporyn’s “A House in Bali” also features a 16-member Balinese gamelan with Balinese singers, traditional dance, live video feeds, and the pulsating post-minimalism of the Bang on a Can All-Stars. We’ll also hear some of Colin McPhee’s music, along with more gamelan music from Bali.
