On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. Moisés Chiullán and Phil West — they built this podcast! They built this podcast on ridiculous kit leaks! (cue the synths) ... and another one befell Austin FC this week. They discuss a certain Austin influencer who released the Electric Watermelon Kit into the wild, plus the Myrto Uzuni and Besard Sabovic signings, the apparent strategy to [eschew] a true No. 10 in favor of a boatload of 6s and 8s, photos from preseason, and exciting new developments about Verde All Day, plus the usual array of suspect pop culture references.…

1 Episode 30: Driussi, Dubersarsky, Uzuni with Tiger, and a Mowed Lawn Electric Watermelon Emergency 48:48
This week, Moisés Chiullán and Phil West give you a brief glimpse behind the curtain, and then dive into all the news, including Sebastián Driussi's move to River Plate, the Nicolás Dubersarsky signing, the all-but-official Myrto Uzuni signing, plus "an exclusive interview with Austin FC sporting director Rodolfo Borrell," some formation contemplation and musings on the new home kit leak and why it might be better than that one photo has led you to believe.…

In this episode, Moisés Chiullán and Phil West look at Austin FC's 2025 schedule and discuss what immediately jumps out to them, including seven league matches in the month of May alone. They also talk about Verde's three new assistant coaches who are all 30somethings, Spanish, and attractive, and talk about about the league just casually dropping each team's GAM totals as if to mock all the hard-working nerds that had been calculating their favorite club's GAM themselves. They also talk about a possible new VerDos signing named Vlad. (Also, there's news of a survey to come and a possible change with the start of the new year; look to Verde All Day for that survey soon.)…

Moisés Chuillán and Phil West were thrilled with your mailbag questions and answered a number of them (with others answered in a written format you'll see Thanksgiving morning). They also discussed some transfer rumors that probably won't come to fruition, a fun MLS Playoffs that is now featuring one of the four teams you expected to still be in it, and then, if your heart can take it, the cutest seven-year-old on the planet dunking on what deserves to be dunked on. (It runs in the family!)…
Moisés Chiullán and Phil West check back in after several weeks away, discussing the roster moves that Austin FC has made, and what's left to be done to finish the project of making the 2025 roster. Also, Verde probably needs a striker, so they entertain the Marvin Ducksch rumor and weigh whether German Budget Chicho Arango is the move. Also, one of us does some impressions you may or may not enjoy. Only one way to find out.…

It happened. Moisés Chiullán and Phil West discuss Josh Wolff's dismissal from Austin FC, the vibes in recent press conferences, and what comes next.
This week, Moisés Chiullán and Phil West lament the state of things for Austin FC, who are not officially mathematically eliminated from the playoffs just yet but about as close as you can be to that. They contemplate the future, and then because it's more fun to talk about, get into Austin FC II's playoff chances (which exist).…

In this episode, Moisés Chuillán and Phil West serve two masters: An Austin FC II team who looks as if it could possibly make the playoffs, and an Austin FC team whose playoff odds have dwindled to 4% on Saturday night according to one nerdy site. They talk about VerDos' win over DynamoDos and Verde's loss to Toronto FC, ponder Josh Wolff's future, and do way more examination of the MLS Next Pro table than you've done lately.…
