Aria Petty One, “Durango’s Favorite Drag Queen” joins me for a conversation about the art of drag in Durango, a small mountain town. Her goal is to bring an art form that you normally have to go to a big city to experience to the Southwest area creating a safe and supportive environment where drag performers can can spread joy, laughter and connection in our community. She’s won multiple awards at the DIVAS awards events in Denver being named Fresh Face of Colorado Drag in 2022 and Best Drag Show in 2023 and through hard work has created a successful business as Event Producer and Drag Queen. She performs in town a few times a week hosting Drag Trivia Night at the Starlight Lounge on Thursdays and Planet Petty on weekends at SKA Brewing and in addition partners with Fort Lewis College where she leads drag performance workshops. She also brings her performances to other small towns in the region including Ouray, Telluride, Pagosa Springs, Buena Vista and Salida where her shows are well received and usually sold out. The art of putting an outfit together for each performance takes a lot of time since just applying make-up can take three to four hours alone as well as selecting outfits and wigs. Aria has come from a big city herself having grown up in Baltimore but finds that she can stand out more and become more successful in a smaller community where she is able to be a part of a drag family. Most of all she hopes to encourage members of the queer community to believe in themselves and to provide an outlet where they can express themselves freely. Coming up on Saturday July 27th she will host the next show at SKA Brewing which will feature local and out of town guest performers.
