Ep. 006: Evolving Identity with Troy Jackson
Manage episode 407461048 series 3560519
This week, Lindsay & Lauren talk with Troy Jackson, a clinical social worker and yoga instructor from the Philadelphia area, about the evolution of his identity. Troy grew from a sensitive and likely neurodivergent young kid to a gregarious college student to a sober yoga teacher and therapist. We hear about how low self-esteem made Troy the perfect candidate for substance use disorder, how he used yoga to support his path to sobriety, and how he questioned his identity as a graduate student. Troy has learned to feel comfortable with not knowing all the answers and with his ever-evolving sense of self.
Mentioned in this Episode:
Growing up in Chester, Pennsylvania, Troy was a shy, sensitive, and quiet child who was often bullied. His low self-confidence made him a perfect candidate for substance use disorder during his young adult years, and he used substances to cope with social situations.
When Troy realized he needed to make a change, he turned to yoga to support his path to sobriety. Yoga provided him with a sense of community and connection and made him feel valued. It helped him discover that his primary purpose in life is to help others.
Troy’s identity continued to evolve as he attended graduate school, leading him to once again question who he was. He talks about how most people who are somewhat outside of the norm tend to feel out of place.
While Troy feels more grounded and happier now, he still questions his identity but feels more comfortable with not knowing all the answers. He tries to live in wonder and curiosity about who he is, slow down as much as possible, and put his intentions out into the universe.
