In this episode of Health Hacktivators, Dr. Alka Patel talks about the impact of food on our chances of getting breast cancer.

A study of over 30,000 women showed a 60% reduction in the risk of getting breast cancer by following five guidelines from the American Institute of Cancer Research. One of the guidelines is to eat more plants and fibre, with at least 25 grams of fibre a day leading to a reduction in breast cancer risk.

Additionally, Dr. Patel discusses the benefits of antioxidants in stopping DNA damage, for example an apple a day can reduce the chances of breast cancer by 24%. On the other hand, high temperature cooking of meat releases heterocyclic amines which increase the susceptibility to breast cancer by damaging DNA. Hence, Dr. Patel suggests a transition to a plant-based diet to reduce the risk of breast cancer. To help with the transition, she provides a simple 5-4-3-2-1 rule of thumb to track fibre intake.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

  • How what you eat affects your chances of cancer
  • The three P’s of cancer
  • Why you should eat more fruit and vegetables
  • How to track your fibre intake
  • How to fuel up your fibre intake
