Many people expect that the divorce decree will end the conflict, game playing, and need to keep going to court. This is not the case for those in high-conflict divorce situations. In today’s episode, we sit down with Lisa Johnson, co-founder of Been There Got Out and a certified domestic violence advocate and coach helping those facing these extremely difficult divorces. Lisa has an inspiring journey, having represented herself through numerous legal battles, culminating in helping pass the pivotal Jennifer's Law in Connecticut, which recognizes coercive control as a form of domestic violence.

Lisa shares her personal experiences with high-conflict divorce, the emotional toll of custody battles, and the importance of perseverance. She now coaches men and women globally on successfully navigating family court, separation, and post-judgment issues, emphasizing the need to break the cycle of trauma and empower parents to make the best decisions for children.

We look into the concept of legal abuse, its devastating effects, and how Lisa's groundbreaking work helps those affected find relief and justice. Plus, Lisa will discuss her book, practical advice, and resources available through Been There Got Out, and the importance of adopting a marathon mindset.

About the Guest:

Lisa Johnson is the co-founder of Been There Got Out, a high conflict divorce coach and certified domestic violence advocate who has successfully represented herself through scores of court appearances. Her case, published in the Connecticut Law Journal, is being used as legal precedent. Her live testimony helped pass Jennifers’ Law in Connecticut, the third state in America to expand its legal definition of domestic violence to include “coercive control.”

She and her partner, Chris, the male half of Been There Got Out, coach people in high-conflict relationships, divorce, custody battles, and co-parenting hell so they have the chance of the best outcome in family court and beyond. They also offer a weekly Legal Abuse Support Group for those dealing with narcissistic opponents in legal matters. Their book, "Been There Got Out: Toxic Relationships, High-Conflict Divorce, and How to Stay Sane Under Insane Circumstances'' was released in March 2023.
