Manage episode 407795837 series 3371230
Part 1:
We talk with Paige Oamek, writer based in New York, and Rohan Montgomery, researcher and writer based in New York.
We discuss the Kentucky bill ("Safer Kentucky") which gives individuals the right to kill 'campers' on their land. It criminalizes homelessness. At a time when housing is difficult to find and afford, this extreme law is a symptom of the cruelty embodied in the Republican party.
Part 2:
We talk with Anders Croy, Communications Director for Florida Watch and DeSantis Watch.
We discuss the warning issued by the NAACP to Black athletes: stay away from Florida colleges and universities. It is likely to affect these schools by hurting their athletic programs, and thus, their boosters. The football season is very important in the South, especially in Florida. (Coach's salary is $7.1M annually) The income from the football program supports other sports programs as well.
We discuss the rise in property and auto insurance premiums, the highest in the nation. The lobbies for those interests have contributed $10M over 5 years, and have received $3B in bailouts. There is very little work being done on the response to climate change in Florida, which will be hard hit.
Schools in Florida have become indoctrination centers, eliminating civil rights discussions, true civics, and any real reading programs. Book bans are still in effect, though most parents are unhappy about this.
