Manage episode 454303017 series 3246861
My guest this week is author Ike Miller
In this episode:-
-
- Ike’s father was an alcoholic, leading to family chaos and eventual divorce.
- He experienced emotional and physical abuse, realizing the effects on his mental health only later in life.
- Ike initially avoided alcohol due to his family background but started drinking at 22
- Like many of us alcohol felt like a magic potion and he loved the effect it had on him
- However as time passed he found himself relying on it more
- During the pandemic, stress, anxiety, and depression exacerbated his drinking, leading to a strained relationship with his wife,
- Ike’s counselor identified his behavior as addictive, which prompted him to seek help.
- So he started addiction counseling, attended Adult Children of Alcoholics meetings, and began addressing unresolved trauma.
- His healing process involved understanding and processing childhood trauma, addressing codependency, and redefining his coping mechanisms.
- He reframed his experiences and began to identify strengths he had built as a result of his challenging childhood.
- Ike eventually achieved sobriety through therapy, support groups, and open communication with his wife.
- He has written a book called Good Baggage
- The book explores how challenges from childhood can become strengths when leveraged correctly.
- It emphasizes reframing childhood trauma as a source of resilience and emotional intelligence.
- 3 Tips for People wanting to quit:-
- Start by acknowledging the problem and seeking help through counseling or support groups.
- Understand that addiction is a response to pain and prioritize healing over shame.
- Recognise that although recovery is hard at the beginning it leads to significant improvements in relationships and self-worth.
