Episode 53

Title: “All Things New”

Text: 2 Corinthians 5:14-21

Theme: A New Creature in Christ

Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.”

Introduction: “A New Creature/Creation”

  • Questions:
    • What does it mean to be a new Creature?
    • How can a person be in Christ?
    • What does it mean that old things are passed away and all things become new?
  • Quote:
    • “The Lord knows very well that you cannot change your own heart and cannot cleanse your own nature. However, He also knows that he can do both. Hear this and be astonished. He can create you a second time. He can cause you to be born again.” – Charles Spurgeon

Romans 5:12-19

  1. The Sentence for the Human Race: 12-14

12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

  • 12: Because one man sinned, death spread upon all of the human race
  • 13: From Adam to Moses sin was not a “transgression” but labeled as rebellion. (The Law had not been written) For example, not one of them broke the law, because there was no law. However, they were judged because they were sinners.
  • 14 Despite the fact that the law was not given, death reigned from Adam to Moses because the human race were sinners.
  • This is the human races sentence, death. Because of sin there is Death. (Three types of death because of sin)
    • Physical Death = separation of body and spirit. Because of Adam’s sin we will die a physical death. (Hebrews 9:27: “27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment”)
    • Spiritual Death = separation from God. Our sin nature inherited from Adam. “Dead in trespasses of sins” ( Eph 2:1 : “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;”)
    • Eternal Death = eternal separation from God

  1. The Sacrifice for the Human Race: v.15,16

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

  1. 15 The easiest way to explain this: Because of Adam’s Disobedience (his sin), death came upon all of the human race (Physical, Spiritual, Eternal). Because of Christ Obedience (His Death on the cross) it is possible for the human race to be Saved.
  2. 16: Life is superior to Death. Jesus Christ Blood is more powerful than our sin.

  1. The Salvation for the Human Race: v. 17-19

17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

  • Because of Adam’s disobedience, there was Condemnation of Death
  • Because of Christ Obedience, there is Justification of Life

So now we see that because of one, there is death… but because of another there is life… a New Life. A New Birth. Because of Him we can be new Creatures.

Jesus said: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” – John 5:24

Let’s go back to our key verse:

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Outline: “All Things New”

  1. A New Purpose v.14,15

14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

  • 14 “constraineth” actually means “pushes out”
  • The love of Christ Pushes us out… it motivates us.
  • Because of Jesus Christ we now have a new purpose. His love is the motivator for life!

  1. A New Perspective v.16

16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.

“The born-again Christian see’s life not as a blurred, confused, meaningless mass, but as something planned and purposeful.” – Billy Graham

  • We now see others through different eyes
  • We no longer look at things “through the flesh” Christ has changed us from within. We are born again. We have a new nature.

  • A New Person v. 17

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

  • A New nature (spiritual warfare)
  • A New reason for living

  1. A New Position v. 18-21

18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

  • Justified = To be rendered Righteous
  • We are now positioned in Christ. When God see’s us, He see’s the blood of Jesus
