Matthew 7:15-20 15 “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions. What Is A False Prophet

1. Someone who falsely speaks on God’s behalf.

2. People who contradict Scripture or Jesus’ teachings.

Galatians 1:6-7 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. NIV

3. People who cultivate spiritual recklessness in others.

2 Peter 2:1-2 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. NIV

What Is New Testament Prophecy

1. A message of encouragement imparted to the believer prompted by the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:3 3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. NIV

2. Prophecy is real and needed for the body of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good. NIV
