When is comes to training, the major goals are to to stay healthy and make sure our training is making us better at our sport. Many athletes follow programs that make them look better and get stronger, but isn't transferrable to their sport and doesn't make them more well-rounded, durable athletes. Training will differ between sports and I give three separate sports/athletes and how training would differ. In addition, I give you 4 must read books that any individual, athlete or not, should read.
