Acclaimed author, social entrepreneur, and cultural activist Sikhumbuzo ‘Skhu’ Thabede announces his entrance into the music industry
with his debut album IMVUNGE YAKWANTU, which translates to "African Rhythmic Chants."
The album features 13 tracks and showcases collaborations with renowned artists like Dr. Tu Nokwe, soulful vocalists Qiniso Nsele, and Zitulele, among others. Notably, Thabede also features his father on one of the tracks. The album blends traditional African rhythms with modern melodies. To bring his vision to life, Thabede enlisted the talents of Themba Ndaba, a member of Mango Groove, and a skilled saxophonist, pianist, and penny whistle soloist.
Joining him were Zipho Sigcau, also known as DJ Teddy, and Celza “Inja Ka-Gogo,” who produced the album. All songs were written by Thabede, with contributions from the featured artists, creating an authentic narrative rooted in his upbringing and life experiences.
“The album is like an unknown journey—imagine walking on an endless road, but the music carries you forward, even though you don’t know the destination,” Thabede says.
Deeply rooted in his Zulu culture and the traditions of Mbaqanga, Thabede’s music fuses authentic African sounds with contemporary beats, focusing heavily on Afro-soul while incorporating elements of Maskandi, Amahubo, Incekeza, and Isicathamiya. His music showcases the rich tapestry of Zulu musical heritage.
Thabede’s African soul sound is deeply inspired by Mbaqanga, a traditional Zulu style that has been around for decades. His melodies reflect the vibrant rhythms of everyday life in rural South Africa, drawing inspiration from his upbringing in Thaleni, Nkandla. Raised in a musical household, where his parents were longstanding choir members and his uncles
enjoyed various musical genres, Thabede’s sound is imbued with familial and cultural influences.
The planned release date for the full album is 25 October 2024.
