River Donaghey grew up in a cult. Or at least that’s what some people called it. His parents called it a “personal-growth seminar group.” Its leader called it “one big happy family.” But there was a dark side to the world River grew up in. One he never heard about as a kid. In the 1970s and 80s, a self-help company called Lifespring took America by storm. As Kendra was hunting for pictures to post on the socials of Carl Panzram, who April presented in last weeks episode, she stumbled across a site where she was able to download the entire autobiography he wrote while in prison, in his own cursive handwriting. And... Kendra got intrigued. Really intrigued... So down the rabbit hole she went. She will be doing a deep dive into it over the next couple episodes. If deep dives aren't your thing, check out Ep.38 for a more condensed version of Panzrams life! To be clear, this is not to give him attention or recognition or sympathy. Regardless of the abuse he suffered as a child, he still made the conscious choice to commit the numerous murders, assaults, and more, that he did. So what's the point? The point is to try to find the answer to the question that most true crime enthusiast ask themselves... Why? Why did they do what they did? And can we learn anything and stop it from occurring in the future? Or are some just born evil?Resource: https://archives.sdsu.edu/repositories/2/archival_objects/65025 Email us at: nocturnaldistractions@gmail.com Use the following link to access all our listening platforms, one time donation sites, and case request form: https://linktr.ee/nocturnaldistractionspodcast Patreon Page with ad free episodes: https://patreon.com/NocturnalDistractions And all the socials: https://instagram.com/nocturnaldistractions https://twitter.com/podcast_nocturn https://www.facebook.com/groups/1042115543384164/?ref=share
