Join Rev. Emily E. Ewing (they) and Rev. Kay Rohloff (she) to dive into Jesus (biblical, historical, and pop cultural!) for episode 3 in our Nerds At Church Superhero Spectacular Season!

The scripture we refer to for this episode can be found here. Although the story of Jesus comes up in the Lectionary on every day except Pentecost (but also kind of even then), we’re linking to episodes that have the readings that we specifically talk about in this episode. John 1:1-17 comes up for the 2nd Sunday of Christmas every year, so we’ve covered it in our first season and also for the 2nd Sunday of Christmas in our second season and for Christmas Day: Nativity of the Lord III in our third season. Luke 4:16-23 is split between the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany Year C and the 4th Sunday after Epiphany Year C. Mark 15:16-41 is an option for part of the Passion reading for those who do Passion Sunday in Lent or for Palm/Passion Sunday in Year B (though we don’t cover it directly in our episode). Matthew 28:1-10 is an option for Easter Sunday in Year A. John 8 is not included in the Revised Common Lectionary. Matthew 5:3-12 is in the gospel reading on the 4th Sunday after Epiphany in Year A and on All Saints Day in Year A.

Kay also mentioned the songs “Dropkick Me Jesus” and “The Rebel Jesus” during the episode.

CN: we talk about white Jesus’ impact, particularly regarding white supremacy and white nationalism during the pop culture Jesus conversation and we mention antisemitism throughout the episode.
