  • Individualized marketing explained
  • The difference between large and small companies
  • The most important aspect of any business
  • Why failing to plan, is planning to fail

00:00 Intro

03:57 You are the CEO of your own life. Think of it that way and take charge of it that way.

05:34 I’d tell my thirty year self to not see everything in B&W, in fact there are shades of gray.

That was the number one thing.

07:04 The second thing i’d tell my thirty year old self is to ask “what is the definition of success?”

07:42 Someone taught me along the way that success is doing what you are good at and enjoying it. Enjoy what you do, don't just chase a title. Do something that makes you feel like your life is fulfilling and rewarding. The feelings you get from what you do are very important.

Business Vs. Personal :

09:08 In business a smart man taught me that if you want something to happen, you gotta make it happen. I think there is a lot of validity to that in business, you gotta just go for it, believe in it, set goals and you gotta work at it.

10:24 In my personal life I tried to do the same thing sometimes and it doesn’t work, you can’t just make something happen, you have to allow it to happen. Another smart person said to me it’s gotta flow like the river”. In business it’s different, you gotta build a boat.

13:00 It’s important to know what type and size of company that you are best fit for. That will set you up to be working for a company or organization that you are compatible with.

14:30 A start-up company is extremely hard work, difficult. I’ve done a number of them where the stock options I received could be used for wallpaper because they are not of any value and that is common. First thing you need to understand as a business owner is that your job is to get and keep customers. People lose focus on that believe it or not, they start thinking their job is to run reports, manage inventory, lower operating costs or whatever the things are but your job is to get and keep customers - One customer at a time.

15:50 Story about when John created Thermascan. How that in five selling years they got to 100 million dollars in sales. Eventually sold the company to Gillette for 200 million.

19:31 The greatest Marketing story i’ve ever heard.

And why you really have to make sure “the dogs will eat it”

You have to ask yourself, is it really a company or just a product?

Does it really solve a need that people have.

25:05 The idea of mass marketing is gone, it’s individualized marketing now. Our computers all know if we visit a site about bicycles, suddenly things start turning up.

26:31 Really think through what you are trying to accomplish with your life financially.

32:53 What do you think that the most important aspect of any business is? Getting and keeping customers.

33:40 What advice do you have around leadership?

The three things you should focus on as you lead your team.

  1. Tell them that we can do this.
  2. Our cause is good.
  3. I care about you.

35:33 Advice on what to do when you make a mistake (In a leadership role).

Admit. Don’t lie about it. Forgive yourself. Try to learn from it. Move on.

“That’s why they put erasers on pencils because people make mistakes”

38:26 What to do if you know you have to fire somebody.

Be kind about it but make it happen.Don’t let it drag out. You can never fire somebody too soon.

39:53 How do you manage your time? John Hyle’s tips on time management.

43:43 If you work for a company, work for it. Really embrace what your company needs from you,If it’s your own company embrace what you need to take from your employees.

“If you work for a company for twenty years you don’t want to have one year of experience twenty times”. You want to have twenty years that were different because times change, you change, you grow.

45:47 You want to have a success strategy not a survival strategy.
