Pub Date is a podcast dedicated to the love of books, and the authors who bring them into the world! In today’s episode, Copper Director of Communications, Alex Hudgens, sits down with author, speaker, former Wisconsin Governor and Senator– Marty Schreiber! His new book, ‘My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver’ has launched into the world as both a beautifully bittersweet love story, and a practical guidebook for caregivers.

In this conversation, Marty shares heartfelt and actionable advice for anyone out there who has an Alzheimer’s patient in their life or community. He explains how Alzheimer’s isn’t a ‘chicken casserole disease’ and how not only the patient, but also the caregivers, need loving and specific support as they navigate this often lonely, difficult journey. Marty discusses the idea of ‘therapeutic fibbing’ and how family and friends can learn to enter in and adapt to the new world of a loved one battling Alzheimer’s. Marty also describes the unique publishing process that led to ‘My Two Elaines’; it’s a story of perseverance and the ability of an important message to take root and grow, no matter what.

Today’s episode is for you if you’re a caregiver, or simply someone who wants to be more supportive of both the caregivers and Alzheimer’s patients in your community. This is a disease that has to be tackled together, and Marty’s practical and empathetic advice is so helpful for all of us who want to do more in the fight. Marty also shares stories from his journey of becoming an author, full of highs, lows, and surprising coincidences that don’t seem like coincidences at all. Listen in if you’re looking for real ways to get involved with Alzheimer’s care, but also, if you’re looking for encouragement through a story of courage and compassion.
