"Theirs was an unlikely life together. Sheila gave birth to Josephine on 11th May 1993 and for twenty-three years they co-existed in a loving mother-daughter relationship, but one with a difference. Josephine suffered catastrophic brain injury at birth, never spoke to Sheila, rarely smiled and was barely able to see the faces of the people who loved her. Without a how-to guide, people around Josephine strove to make her life better through years of multiple medical procedures, tortuous therapies and uncomfortable equipment. But this isn't a misery memoir; it's the story of a person who touched the lives of so many people - a bright and beautiful young lady who could 'work the room'. despite her enormous limitations. She brought out the best in people. Expect to cry, expect to laugh, but don't expect to be indifferent to this story." - Can I Speak to Josephine Please? by Sheila Brill. Today I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with the very lovely Sheila Brill, author of Can I Speak to Josephine Please? Just got back from Portugal; a well needed vacation. Then got on the phone with me to talk about her book and some of the memories shared with Josephine. We also discuss some of the difficulties producers face while creating an audiobook. Support Sheila by checking out her book on Amazon, Audible, and her website. Also by spreading the word about Sheila and Josephine's story. Together we all can raise awareness of an issue that is not even talked about. So many families sit in silence. Endure in silence, but no longer. Sheila wants you to know that you are not alone and that she understands your plight and is advocating for those who are unable to. "The aim is to help them understand the consequences of birth trauma, the lived consequences of birth trauma." - Sheila Brill Can I Speak to Josephine Please? Has the potential to be distributed into universities as reading material because this is such an important and real issue people face. This is discussed as well during our conversation. "The President of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists says 'Every Obstetrician should read this book.'" - Sheila Brill Sheila, thank you for a wonderful and insightful conversation. You are truly an inspiration and I'm so grateful you reached out to be apart of my podcast. Should I tell them Sheila? Yea, I'll tell them. As a bonus, Sheila and I have decided it would be great to do an update episode. So please stay tuned for that as well! I definitely can't wait for it!
