We are taught that anger is “bad”. It’s not! No emotion or feeling is bad. They all have a purpose and anger is no different. Anger is often the surface emotion of a feeling or feelings that we’re feeling under the surface. So don’t be afraid of your anger. That said, don’t hide from it either. What is happening that is making you feel angry? Let your anger tell you what’s happening underneath your other emotions. Let your anger help you take the action you need to change what isn’t working in your life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Anger is a secondary emotion. The primary underlying emotions for anger are fear, loss, sadness, and shame.
  • There are three main approaches to manage your anger:
    • Express your anger in a healthy, assertive way; not aggressively.
    • Suppress your anger, again in a positive way, where you convert your anger – i.e. – take a positive action – or redirect it and focus on something positive.
    • Use calming techniques to calm down internally, like breathing techniques.

BEST MOMENTS

Where there is anger, there is always pain underneath. -Eckhart Tolle

Anger is a sign that something needs to change. – unknown

Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. -Buddha

It’s a lot easier to be angry at someone than it is to tell them you’re hurt. -Tom Gates

Tears of despair can be fuel. Thunders of anger can be light. -Maxime Legace

Anger expressed in a healthy and positive way means that we channel emotional anger towards resolution not attack. -Byron R. Pulsifer
