#472: NYS Aid Cuts Would Be Devastating To FLX Schools
Manage episode 400833150 series 3129959
Among the most-controversial items inside Governor Kathy Hochul's 2024-25 proposed state budget are massive cuts to school aid. Among the most-staggering cuts in the Finger Lakes - Penn Yan losing $2.2 million, Watkins Glen losing $1.9 million, or South Seneca losing 1.5 million.
This week we caught up with Hammondsport Superintendent Kyle Bower, who said his district stands to lose more than 30% of its state aid if Hochul's budget is adopted as-is. It's a reality that he says would devastate his district, and most other rural ones across the region.
Sports, programs, and staff would be cut if the budget is approved as proposed by Hochul; and the impact wouldn't stop there, Bower said. A significant tax increase would also be necessary to keep districts functioning.
