If we’re serious about emancipatory projects, we need to think trans. In this episode, Heidi speaks with two queer activists and writers about how to start down this road. Florence Ashley is a transfeminine activist and scholar based at the Faculty of Law at McGill University in Montreal. Her work focuses on bioethics and transgender healthcare. Florence is on the Advisory Board of the Trans Legal Clinic and is a member of the Comité trans of the Conseil Québécois LGBT. They are the recipient of the 2019 Canadian Bar Association’s LGBTT Hero Award, and next year, they will begin work as the first openly trans law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada. Daniel Karasik is an artist and activist based in Toronto. They are the author of five books including a poetry collection, three volumes of plays, and most recently a compilation of short stories titled Faithful and Other Stories with Guernica. Daniel has won the CBC Short Story Prize, as well as the Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award. They are active in the Fight for $15 and Fairness campaign, as well as in the prison abolition movement.
