On this episode, we’re introducing the first of our new ongoing series on mothers in politics. Today we’re talking to Dr. Michelle Au, the author and anesthesiologist who was just elected to Georgia’s state senate. She’s telling us how a busy mom with no prior political experience became a state senator, what her goals are for her time in office, and why other moms should consider throwing their hats in the ring.
Michelle Au, MD, MPH is an anesthesiologist at Emory-St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She received her MD from Columbia University and completed her residency training there in 2008. A decade later, she returned to Columbia to study at the Mailman School of Public Health, focusing on healthcare management and policy, and graduated with a Masters of Public Health in 2019. During her third year of medical school, Dr. Au started penning the “Scutmonkey” comic series, inspired by the absurdity of medical training. During her final year of residency training, Dr. Au wrote a medical memoir entitled This Won’t Hurt a Bit (And Other White Lies): My Education in Medicine and Motherhood, which was published by Grand Central Publishing in 2011. She has been a featured writer for The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, Slate, Medium, KevinMD, and Psychology Today. In November 2020, she was elected to the Georgia State Senate for District 48, running on a platform of improving access to care and health outcomes in Georgia. Dr. Au lives in Johns Creek, GA with her husband and three children.
