1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,

3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’”

PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD

Mark begins by quoting Isaiah’s prophecy [Isa 40:3] which anticipated John's ministry. The phrase "before your face," in the ESV, simply means John preceded Jesus. In the the NASB this is stated as "I send my messenger ahead of you." The first 13 verses [Mark 1:1–13] is the first section of this book describing how God used John the Baptist, Israel’s last prophet, to prepare His people.

In this section, John "prepares the way" for Jesus and the message of salvation, and shows how John prepared for His ministry. The Messiah's arrival had happened finally as prophesied in Genesis 3:15.

He introduced Jesus as both the Christ[Messiah] and the Son of God. The term "Messiah," means the "anointed one." By His anointing, God has chosen or commissioned Him to save us from our sins and restore our relationship with God. And, as the "Son of God," Jesus is both Messiah and divine. Jesus is the one who has come from the Father and is equal with the Father. He is God and man in one person, fully God and fully human.

God has been warning His people not to sin. A number of prophecies exhorting the Israelites to look for the Messiah's coming. Similarly today, He will often send messengers to us, preparing our hearts for His truth. Our responsibility is to listen and take God's warning.

John's message to the people to repentance [turn away from their sins] is the spiritual truth behind the geographic metaphor. Their repentance would prepare them for the coming Messiah. In like manner, by rejecting our sins and seeking God's forgiveness, we smooth the way for our hearts to receive God and the forgiveness we so desperately need.
