Can I ask you … what exactly is grace? For some it’s a religious term that gets bandied around so often that it becomes almost meaningless. And yet, grace is the single most powerful force for change in the world.

Yesterday we celebrated Christmas. We saw that God wanted to speak to us through this Jesus, God the Son, whom He sent to become a man, to dwell in our midst:

John 1:14 And the Word [Jesus] became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (NRSV)

Jesus, God’s Word, God speaking to us in a language that we can understand, shining His glory on us, overflowing His grace and truth into our lives. And (next verse) …

John 1:16,17 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (NRSV)

The law, this idea of following a bunch of rules … that doesn’t change you. But grace – the giving of a gift, the showing of a kindness, the forgiveness that you simply don’t deserve … man, being on the receiving end of that, that changes you.

None of us – not you, not me – deserves Jesus; His death on that Cross to pay the price that God’s justice demands for our rebellion against Him. But God poured out grace upon grace (on us!) – the free gift of forgiveness through Jesus, of eternal life, all out of His great love for you and me.

Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
