Welcome to another episode of Flip Your Script, a vodcast by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, hosted by ACLM President Dr. Padmaja Patel. In each episode, we explore five key takeaways on how lifestyle medicine is helping each guest reimagine the future of healthcare.

This episode, “Lifestyle Medicine Approach to Managing POTS" features Dr. Jennifer Shalz, Medical Director of St. Luke’s Health System Lifestyle Medicine Department, and Molly Lynn, Nurse Practitioner and lifestyle medicine specialist. Together, they share how St. Luke’s is transforming care for patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) through a multidisciplinary, lifestyle-first model.

Dr. Shalz and Molly discuss how this condition—often affecting young women and triggered by viral illness—has increased in prevalence since the COVID-19 pandemic. They outline how their team designed a structured 3–6 month intervention that empowers patients to manage symptoms through evidence-based lifestyle behaviors, from fluid and salt intake to graded physical activity, sleep, and stress management.

Through this conversation, you’ll hear how St. Luke’s is redefining chronic condition management by combining lifestyle medicine principles with collaborative care pathways, and why validation, education, and patient empowerment are essential to improving quality of life for those living with POTS.

If you’re interested in how lifestyle medicine can support complex, chronic conditions through personalized, integrative strategies—this is an episode you won’t want to miss.

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) is the medical professional society for physicians and other professionals dedicated to clinical and worksite practice of lifestyle medicine as the foundation of a transformed and sustainable healthcare system.

Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.

Lifestyle medicine-certified clinicians are trained to apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when used intensively, often reverse such conditions. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine—a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and positive social connections—also provides effective prevention for these conditions.
