THE FREEDOM TO TAME THE TONGUE Pastor Israel Velasco Sunday October 29, 2023 “If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.” James 1:26 (NLT) “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” Proverbs 18:21 (NLT) “And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.” Matthew 12:36-37 (NLT) “I said to myself, “I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.” Psalm 39:1 (NLT) How Much Control Do You Have Over Your Tongue? “When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” James 3:3-6 NLT “Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.” James 3:2 (NLT) “Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous? 13 Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies!” Psalm 34:12-13 (NLT) WHAT Impedes Us From Taming The Tongue? 1. A Well-Fed Flesh “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.” James 3:9-12 (NIV) “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16 (NLT) 2. An Unchecked Temper “A quick-tempered person does foolish things…” Proverbs 14:17a (NIV) “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. 20 Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.” James 1:19-20 (NLT) 3. An Arrogant Heart “Silence their lying lips—those proud and arrogant lips that accuse the godly.” Psalm 31:18 (NLT) “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV) 3 STEPS TO SUCCESSFULLY TAME THE TONGUE: 1. Go To God “All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” James 3:7-8 (NLT) “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.” Psalm 141:3 (NIV) 2. Guard Your Heart “For whatever is in your heart determines what you say.” Matthew 12:34b (NLT) “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.” Matthew 12:35 (NLT) 3. Gauge Your Tongue “But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language.” Colossians 3:8 (NLT) “Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.” Proverbs 10:19 (NLT) A Christian Life With No Control Of The Tongue Is A Counterfeit Christian Life Out Of Control. ............................
