Welcome to Career Tips & Trends.
Internet radio for savvy professionals – doing work you love, work that matters.

Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power.

Jim KimberlyToday’s show is brought to you by Appia, an online workspace where you can collect and curate all your career information. Appia is designed to help career professionals and their clients take their careers to the next level. Currently Appia’s online workspace is only available through one of our training programs or through other career coaches.

Our guest today, Jim Kimberly of Sapphire Consulting, talks about emotional intelligence and the importance of knowing ourselves. Self-awareness is an important first step in understanding how we relate to others. And as we simplify career and life issues, it all comes down to the Small Town RulesSM – its our relationships and reputation that we build our success on.

Jim helps individuals and teams reach their goals by removing obstacles to both personal and group success. He founded Sapphire Consulting after spending more than two decades in human services and the behavioral healthcare fields.

In addition to holding a master’s in social work, he has advanced certifications in emotional intelligence and has been designated as one of 13 EQi 2.0 Train the Trainers in the US.

In The News

“If all the statisticians in the world were laid head to toe, they wouldn’t be able to reach a conclusion” ~ Anon.

In May economists surveyed by MarketWatch predicted…165,000 jobs would be added. The actual number was reported as 69,000. We need about 250,000 jobs a month to bring unemployment rate back down to levels seen before 2007-09.

According to the Jobs Outlook Survey conducted by the Society of Human Resource Management, hiring activity and optimism about job growth have improved compared to a year ago. A recent poll by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development reports employers planning on increasing staffing for the first time in a year.

Though this is good news, the Society of Human Resource Management is continuing to report that many employers are having trouble matching skills of job seekers with open positions.

  • What does this mean to you and your profession?
  • Are you maintaining and keeping your skills relevant?
  • Are you looking at other revenue streams?
  • What’s your reality?

Today’s Interview

In today’s interview Jim recommends a 3-step model to increase our emotional intelligence – listen, learn and lead. Listen to the full interview.

Tip:

A simple way to demonstrate good listening is to use people’s name in conversations, and to use their preferred name. Listen to how someone introduces themselves or signs their name and make sure that’s the name you use. If is not only a sign of good listening, it’s a sign of respect.

To be able to listen and learn often places us in an uncomfortable place. You might want to check out human connection researcher Brené Brown’s TED talk on “the power of vulnerability”
