Legal Harms & the New Politics of Resistance: Examining the Juridification of Social (in)justice, Legitimacy, Violence and Extremism Extremism and surveillance are top of the global political agenda. How do state responses to harm shape contemporary culture, and relate to interpersonal violence and resistance? To help us ponder these questions, in a series of four presentations, Eva Nanopoulos (Law) and Loraine Gelsthorpe (Criminology), problematise the ways in which the legal system can both cause and prevent 'harm'. Ryan Williams (Divinity) draws on his analysis of prisoner heirarchies in high security prisons in England to discuss how faith is used as a route to resistance, and Amy Nivette (Sociology) reflects on the relationship between state legitimacy and interpersonal violence. - Dr Eva Nanopoulos (Law): 'The Prevent Strategy' - Dr Ryan Williams (Divinity): 'Islamic Piety and the Subversive Good in Maximum Security Prisons' - Professor Loraine Gelsthorpe (Criminology): 'Imprisonment of Women' - Dr Amy Nivette (Criminology): 'Legal Harms, Delegitimization, and Violence' The presentations are followed by a group discussion with the speakers.
