Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 30 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Wednesday morning 31 July 2024.
Happy birthday Culden!
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent, where it is clear and a freezing 19 degrees Celsius at 5am.
In the Paris Olympic Games Women’s Rugby 7s: Fijiana 7s lost 15-21 South Africa overnight to finish dead last in Paris, after winning bronze in Tokyo 2021.
In other games on the final day of rugby 7s at the Paris Olympics -
· Japan 38-7 Brazil for 9th
· Great Britain 28-12 Ireland for 7th
· France 21-7 China for 5th
· USA 14-12 Australia for bronze
· New Zealand 19-12 Canada for gold
Also at the Olympic Games today – American flagbearer and tennis superstar Coco Gauff was left crying and declaring she had been “cheated” in a shock singles loss at the Paris Olympics.
Gauff was upset 7-6, 6-2 by Croatia’s Donna Vekic, after being screwed by a brutal call that went against her.
There are 14 gold medal events in Paris today:
· Artistic gymnastics: Women’s team final
· Fencing: Women épée team medal finals
· Judo: Women 63Kg, Men 81Kg medal rounds
· Rugby 7s: Women medal finals
· Shooting: Mixed team 10M air pistol finals, Men trap qualification and finals
· Surfing: With a storm system south of Tahiti rolling in, organisers were forced to abandon competition, and with conditions expected to get worse, the Men’s & Women’s finals could be on hold for a few days.
· Swimming: Men 800M free finals, Men 4x200M free relay final
· Table tennis: Mixed doubles medal finals
· Triathlon: Men individual final
In Paris Olympic Games Basketball Men group phase: France 94-90 Japan and Canada 93-83 Australia.
In Rugby League: The NZ Warriors have made history by becoming the first NRL Club to sell out all of their home games, with confirmation their final two matches of 2024 at Go Media Stadium in Auckland against Parramatta and Canterbury next month will be full houses as support for rugby league continues to grow across the ditch.
In SportsBiz: For the Paris Olympic Games opening ceremony, Peacock generated more than 2.5 million viewers - the No. 1 event in their streaming history.
Across all of NBCUniversal’s streaming platforms, including Peacock, the company also generated more than 1 billion minutes of consumption through Friday—six times the comparable figure from Tokyo.
Saturday, meanwhile, brought 4.7 million viewers to Peacock, marking its second-best day of engagement ever.
In Football: Paris Olympic Games Men’s Football group stage games: Morocco 3-0 Iraq, Argentina 2-0 Ukraine, France 2-0 New Zealand and USA 2-0 Guinea.
In Boxing: Two boxers who were banned from the World Championships for being deemed biologically male have been cleared to compete at the Paris Olympic Games as women.
Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan, were disqualified from the Women's World Boxing Championships in March 2023 in New Delhi, after a series of DNA tests were ordered amid concerns over their gender.
The President of the International Boxing Association, claimed the tests had proven that Khelif and Yu-Ting had 'XY chromosomes' and were trying to fool their colleagues by pretending to be women'.
But the IBA has been stripped of the right to run Olympic boxing competitions, amid concerns over governance and the IOC say all athletes involved are eligible to compete, with current rules viewed as more relaxed than those of the IBA.
And that’s a wrap girls er boys – whatever!
