Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 54 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Sunday morning 25 August 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent, where it is another sweltering 23 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning – crazy, crazy!
In Rugby Union: We tip Eddie Jones’ Samurai warriors to be too strong for Canada in their Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup opening round clash at BC Place in downtown Vancouver, kicking off at 10am Fiji time this morning.
And in Rugby League: After learning that the Panthers had just lost and a win would seal the NRL Minor Premiership 2024, the Storm came out firing in the second half and claimed their fifth title in eight years with a 48-6 win over the Dolphins.
It was capped off with a special moment in the 69th minute when Nelson Asofa-Solomona scored in his 200th NRL game.
In Football: You heard about Portuguese soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo launching his YouTube channel right?
Well it immediately shattered sign-up records, after seeing 20 million subscribers sign up on the first day, Ronaldo’s YouTube page surpassed 30 million followers by the end of the week, and it is still climbing.
Ronaldo’s presence on YouTube now, adds to his social media following, which has already exceeded 700 million.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is 39, and he looks ready to dominate the content game whenever he finally hangs up his boots.
In the WNBA: Despite a month-long break due to the Paris Olympics, the WNBA continued its momentum into its first full week since returning to action.
Last week’s win by Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever over the Seattle Storm averaged 2.2 million viewers on ABC, the third-most-watched regular-season game this year.
While Clark is still the WNBA’s main draw, the rest of the WNBA is also growing - on Tuesday, the Connecticut Sun hosted the Los Angeles Sparks in Boston’s TD Garden, attracting a sellout crowd of 19,156, the most in their franchise history.
And in Boxing: Boxing great, Floyd “Money” Mayweather fights John Gotti III, the grandson of American mafioso and boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City, John Gotti.
They fight in Mexico City today; so Mayweather turned up for their fight in an amoured vehicle!
And in Sportsbiz: The cost of success keeps going up for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The two-time defending Super Bowl Champions are nearing a four-year, US$72Million contract extension with center Creed Humphrey.
The deal includes US$50M guaranteed and will make Humphrey the highest-paid center in NFL history.
This is less than three weeks after the Chiefs made similar history in a four-year US$25.6M extension with kicker Harrison Butker, that makes him the highest-paid player ever at that position.
Since winning the Super Bowl in February, the Chiefs’ deal-making also includes a five-year US$100M deal for Head Coach Andy Reid that makes him the highest-paid coach in all of US sports.
Maybe Taylor Swift is paying for some of this!
And that’s a wrap peeps!
