Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 35 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Monday morning 05 August 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent, where it is partially cloudy and 21 degrees Celsius again at 5am.
At the Paris Olympic Games, the big guns came out to play;
All hail the King of Tennis!
Novak Djokovic defeated Carlos Alcaraz yesterday to claim a maiden Olympic title and become just the fifth player to complete a career Golden Slam.
The 37-year-old Serbian legend, competing in his fifth Games, came through 7-6, 7-6 in an enthralling final at Roland Garros to add Olympic gold to his 24 Grand Slam titles.
Victory allowed him to join Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, Steffi Graf and the watching Serena Williams as the only players to win all four Grand Slam tournaments and Olympic singles gold.
An emotional Djokovic celebrated by holding aloft the Serbian flag on court before clambering into the players’ box to embrace his wife and children.
Meanwhile, world golf number one Scottie Scheffler struck a sublime nine-under 62 in the final round of the Men’s golf competition to finish at a stunning 19-under and claim gold in Paris.
Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood threatened, but a bogey on 17 saw him finish second on 18-under overall for silver.
While Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama carded a six-under 65 to finish a further shot behind for bronze.
And there are 28 gold medal events in Paris today, where in the Men’s 100M – American sprinter Noah Lyles won gold by five one thousandth of a second, with for the first time ever, eight sprinters crossing in under ten seconds.
Basketball Men’s quarterfinals tomorrow – Germany vs Greece, Serbia vs Australia, France vs Canada and USA vs Brazil.
Women’s basketball prelims – Nigeria 79-70 Canada, Belgium 85-58 Japan, USA 87-68 Germany and the Australian Opals – as Lauren Jackson says, “must simply beat France or go home!”
In Rugby League: Penrith’s Isaah Yeo says he’s not surprised Nathan Cleary continues to deliver in clutch moments as the halfback yet again got his team out of jail in the dying stages as the Panthers downed Newcastle 14-22 at BlueBet Stadium yesterday.
With scores tied 14-14 and with nine minutes remaining, Cleary took the game into his own hands with a scintillating solo effort beating three defenders to score next to the posts.
Games over!
In Football: Paris Olympic Games Football Women’s QFs yesterday: Canada 2-4 Germany and France 0-1 Brazil.
So in the Women’s Semifinals tomorrow: USA vs Germany and Brazil vs Spain.
In the Men’s Semifinals tomorrow: Morocco vs Spain and France vs Egypt.
In Boxing: The American heavyweight boxing scene is in complete and total disarray, and it's all because of one man — Martin Bakole.
The Scotland-based Congo boxer battered Jared Anderson in a one-sided, fifth-round knockout win Saturday at the BMO Stadium in South-Central Los Angeles.
Anderson has long been regarded as the next BIG thing in the American heavyweight division.
And that’s a wrap!
