In this episode we take a look at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) in the education world.

New month, new Toolkit! This month we’re sharing our experiences with predominately white institutions (PWIs). This month we are going to be breaking PWIs into two parts: the beginning of the month we will be discussing Academic PWIs and the second half of the month we’ll dive into professional PWIs. Our goal with this topic will be for Unicorns to have a place of refuge, feel seen and hopefully acquire some techniques in order to thrive in these spaces. We also desire our co-conspirator’s to not only be aware of these predominately white spaces but how to take action towards meaningful and sustainable inclusivity. In this episode you will hear:

  • What is a PWI?
  • Why are we talking about them?
  • Being part of the majority is a privilege.
  • PWIs impact on an Academic environment which includes
  • Curriculum
  • Staffing
  • Mentorship
  • Discussion on one of April Toolkit’s articles: Your Predominantly White Organization (Yes, Even Yours) is Exactly One Live- Tweeted Racist Event Away from Public Disgrace.
  • The emotional impact on students of color in Academic PWIs.
  • Are HBCUs (Historical Black Colleges and Universities) the solution to PWIs?
  • How can POC cope in these PWIs?
  • A brief discussion on the “Watch” portion of April’s Toolkit: Blurred Lines: A Documentary on the Declining Differences Between Historically Black Colleges & Universities in Today’s Society.

This week we decided to skip Getting Mad at The World and go straight to our Happy Place!! Hint - kitchen top appliances and Asian market surprises really are the simple pleasures in life. Make sure you check-out our Instagram page for the complete list of all of April’s Toolkit items, and as always, we’d appreciate your feedback!
