A study by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) reveals a significant rise in drug driving charges in NSW, with cases increasing by 836% from 1,409 in 2014 to 13,815 in 2023.

The surge is attributed to two factors: the expansion of the Mobile Drug Testing (MDT) program, increasing tests from 20,000 to 156,000 annually, and a rise in detection rates, especially among repeat offenders.

However, there’s no evidence linking the trend to changes in drug use or behavior.

Clinton speaks with BOCSAR's Jackie Fitzgerald, Executive Director, NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics & Research, who notes that while the program prioritises road safety, the number of tests remains low compared to registered drivers, limiting its deterrence.
