The former president has been discussing the idea of a government efficiency commission with his advisers for weeks.
However, his speech to the Economic Club of New York on Thursday was the first time he publicly endorsed the idea.
It was also the first time Trump said Musk had agreed to lead the body.
He did not detail precisely how such a commission would work, saying only that it would develop a plan to eliminate ‘fraud and improper payments’.
‘I will create a government efficiency commission charged with conducting a comprehensive financial and performance audit of the entire federal government and making recommendations for sweeping reforms,’ Trump said.
‘I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises,’ Musk wrote on X on Thursday. ‘No salary, no title, no recognition needed.’
