It is time for the conclusion of the Video Game Book Club episodes dedicated to my completion of Trails in the Sky FC! This game blew me away and I want to talk about the rest of it! Make sure to check out part 1 covering the first half of the game in Pining for Pixels # 84. This week is the 2nd and final part of my play through where I cover the last half of this game. As I noted before, I wanted to be sure I completed this game before its remake comes out next year, and I am VERY glad that I did it! I was left almost speechless by the end and when I look back at my journey with this game, I can't believe I held off on diving in for so long. This one is very much worth your time if you are into the golden age of Japanese developed RPGs, but it has so many quality of life features that you don't have to worry about adjusting to some seriously archaic designs. Tune in to find out why you shouldn't simply wait for the remake, and dive in today! Be warned I dedicate the last 5 mins of this episode to spoiler talk about the story, but prior to that I do my best to remain spoiler free, and provide ample warning when it is time to get into spoilers.

Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. This week I am premiering a new episode segment idea: Critical Flop-Buster! In this new segment I will be looking at games that were were critically panned, but I thought were actually really good, or games that were critically praised that I strongly disliked, or were massively disliked or dismissed by the gaming community at large. For this inaugural entry into this segment, I am going to look at Ryse: Son of Rome, a launch game for the Xbox One back in the day. This game was critically panned and largely disliked by gamers. I almost didn't get it when I got the Xbox One, however, at the last minute I opted to give it a shot anyway, and am I ever glad that I did, because I loved it! March 3rd marks the 8 year anniversary of the Nintendo Switch, arguably one of the greatest video game consoles of all time. This little device today is recognized as a massive success and a money printing machine for Nintendo, but this wasn't always the case. At the time of launch, while there was a lot of excitment about Nintendo's impending release, there was also a lot of skepticism too, with good reason. Coming on the heels of one their biggest flops in history (the WiiU), the Switch was far from a sure thing. It is a funny thought today, to think that some doubted this console, but a lot has happened from that time to now. Oh this week's episode, I wanted to look into what house rules people are using these days. House rules are a long and glorious tradition for tabletop roleplaying games. Ever since the hobby began with the original D&D release in 1974, house rules have been baked in and expected at almost every table. It had been a while since I last looked up what house rules people were pushing, and in this day and age, as we are all connected via the internet, I fully expected a deluge of house rules and likely bickering about it. I was not disappointed! In fact I found such a large amount of house rule chatter that I decided to make this volume 1 of potentially many more Ritual of Scrying episodes. I was pretty excited to do this episode and finally play the first Klonoa game after all the wonderful things I had heard about it. After playing it now, I can say in some ways it was worthy of the hype, but in other ways it kinda fell short. That said, it was certainly a nice brisk experience, and one that I think suited the book club series of episodes well! This series has a pretty dedicated base of fans, and a lot of it is driven by the nostalgia of playing this one when younger. I can completely see why this would leave such a lasting impression on someone, and even for me today, having experienced the game without having it spoiled, it still left an impression despite my lack of nostalgia for it. It's time for another entry in the top 100 as we slowly but surely count down the top 100 video games of all time. Star Fox was a game that you might find difficult to get into, but it was partially a case of "you had to be there". In the time that Star Fox was released, we had never seen anything that advanced looking on the SNES, nor any console before. Seeing was believing though, and the game, in true Nintendo fashion, was a well designed and tight playing rail shooter filled with personality and good replay value. So although today it isn't visually impressive, the gameplay is still as good as ever and worth your time, regardless of your experience with the franchise. Just as good was the next title in this franchise, Star Fox 64, but it all started with the SNES original. The final core rulebook in the revised 204/2025 D&D 5e lineup is now out at local game stores and soon to be everywhere. I picked up my copy recently and have had some time to look through it, compare it against what has come before, and particularly against what we had with its 2014 counterpart. I've got some good news.... but I also have some bad news. Much like the PHB and DMG before it, there are some missed opportunities in my opinion, but still, there is enough to like here as well that it might make you scratch your head a bit. If you have the original 5e 2014 core rulebooks, don't throw those out just yet! However, don't completely write these ones off either, particularly the new Monster Manual. This one is looking at the dual cart for Metal Dragon & Life on Mars, which in my opinion are the perfect match together! Both of these games saw life as modern day retro releases on the Sega Genesis (seperately), getting a proper cartridge for the original hardware and everything. Now these 2 titles have been combined together for this newest Evercade release, and it is a match made in heaven. I was able to put them both through their paces. If you are a fan of the good ol' 16 bit days, and especially if you were a Sega kid growing up, you owe it to yourself to get this cart and play these 2 amazing games. I recently discovered this wonderful book after watching a recent episode of the YouTube "ACKS to Grind" podcast from Alexander Macris. Author John N McGowan was the featured guest and they discussed the topic of this book, and I was really impressed by the insights and discussion they had. I felt like they understood the kind of game that really appeals to me, so I immediately ordered a copy of his book "The Living Campaign" from Amazon (and it is a really nice price). After having had some time with it, I came to realize that this is a great resource for GMs all over who play in this style or want to know about this style. In fact, it is a great read for anyone with even a passing interest in this old school style, that is still alive and kicking today thanks to the OSR. However, with this one, someone clearly did their homework. While there still are some very obvious entries, there were also more than a few here that surprised me.
