It was my 18th birthday, and frankly I was an amazing kid. I studied hard, listened to theater most of my days, and would say I love you to everyone and everything. I, literally, held a vigil for a dead bird I found near where we lived. To say, I was soft was understatement, but I was also an overachiever… president of her class, lead in theater, and a straight A student. Thus, my mother rewarded me with a birthday party for 18th and shipping away to college. It was a lovely, formal event and people excited because she had thrown me a sweet 16 for the ages, and I was so excited for the supposed new world of college, I let her plan…. no interventions or opinions from me. We were living the dream, and I was shocked my father did not want to come. I had to beg him, which now, in perspective, makes me feel my own shame. My mother and I were begging someone that threatened to humiliate and separate us to show up for my party and yet we did.
