Being a Connected Church: So far we have looked at the overall concept of what it means to be a “Connected Church”. So we understand that the Bible teaches that the call of God’s church is to be connected to God, God’s people and God’s purpose. Last week I took you through the concept of being connected to God. There are three parts… You connect to God, first and foremost, through Christ. We looked at the second part and that is being connected to God through communication, specifically through Him communicating to us by the Scripture and us communicating to Him through prayer. And lastly, we discussed what it looks like to be connected to God through obeying His commandments. Last week we looked at what it means to be connected to God’s people. We said e are God’s people because Jesus first loved us. We said we are God’ people once we have had faith in Christ and made part of the family of God. And then we explored the primary ways we connect to God’s people thought loving each other and laying our lives down for one another by making each other a priority. Let’s pick up where we left off in Acts 2. In Acts 2, we see a church that is connected to God, God’s people and God’s purpose. We’ve already covered verses 42-46, but let me go over them again so that when we pick up where we left off you will get a hint of God’s purpose in the text. Read Acts 2:42-46 (and verse 47) (v. 47) “…praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.” With that, we are ready to jump into our main text for today’s message. We are back in John 15 for the third time, this time we will finish the chapter. Read John 15:18-27, then pray. What is God’s Purpose? Jesus chose us and appointed us for it… (v. 16) “You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit…” Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit so that we could accomplish it… (v. 26-27) “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.” When we are rightly connected to God and God’s people, God’s purpose will be accomplished… (Acts 2:47) “…the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.” So what is it? What is God’s purpose? What we would be disciples that make disciples. John 15:8 “My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.” The fruit comes from being a disciple that makes disciples. What is a disciple? A disciple is someone that is rightly connected to God, God’s people and God’s purpose. So let’s bring it all together by talking about what it looks like to be connected to God’s purpose. Being connected to God’s purpose means… We are disconnected from the world. (v. 18-19) “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.” We are consistently producing works. (v. 24) “…the works…” We are intentionally being witnesses. (v. 26-27) “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.” We are helping people walk the walk. (v. 26-27) “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.” Genesis 2:18 (NASB) “…the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him." It is about making disciples.…
Being a Connected Church So far we have looked at the overall concept of what it means to be a “Connected Church”. Let’s pick up there… The Great Commandment: Matthew 22:37-40 “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind’ This is the great and foremost commandment…” [This week we are focusing being a connected church when it comes to God’s People.] “…The second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” First, let’s define God’s people… Whether you are male or female, young or old, born or unborn, sinner of saint you have 5 things in common with everyone else and that makes you, in one sense, God’s people. Let me explain… We’re all people. Humans, Unique, Special & Valuable We are all created by God. We are all created in the “image of God”. We are all created for God. We are all loved by God. All 5 of these are reasons God gives the command… “you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” A church that is connected to God’s people, yes, loves and values all people, but they are especially connected to those in the family of God. So when I use the term God’s people, it is more intimate than what I just previously described. So generally speaking, all people, BORN and UNBORN, are “God’s people” in that they are people, created by God, in the image of God, for God and loved by God. But specifically speaking, God’s people are those that not just born and unborn but those that are REBORN! (John 3 “…you must be born again…” We started of this series of messages in John 15:1-11. Let’s go back to John 15 now and pick up where we left off… Read John 15:12-17 (then pray) We are God’s people because… Jesus loved us first. (v. 16) “…You did not choose Me but I chose you…” Jesus made us family. (v. 17) “…that whatever you ask of the Father…” We connect to God’s people through… Loving one another (v. 12, 17) “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you…This I command you, that you love one another.” Romans 12:10-18 (NASB) “10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; 11 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, 13 contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.” Laying our lives down for one another. (v. 13) “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” 1 John 3:16 (NASB) “We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” But what does it mean to “lay down” our lives for each other? Look at Acts 2:42-46 (47) (NASB) “They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart…”…

Nehemiah: Chapter 12 5 Characteristics of a Dedicated Church: Purpose is clear. (v. 27) “Now at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought out the Levites from all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem so that they might celebrate the dedication with gladness…” Participation is common. (v. 27) “…the Levites…” (v. 31) “…the leaders…” (v. 35) “…the priests…” (v. 36) “…the scribe…” (v. 40) “…the officials…” (v. 42) “…and the singers…” (v. 43) “…the women and children…” (v. 45) “…the gatekeepers…” (v. 47) “…all Israel…” Everyone is pitching in. They are all doing kingdom work. You never hear anyone say, “that’s not my job” Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men…” Praise is contagious. (v. 31) “Then I had the leaders of Judah come up on top of the wall, and I appointed two great choirs…” (v. 40) “Then the two choirs took their stand in the house of God. So did I and half of the officials with me…” (v. 42-43) “…And the singers sang, with Jezrahiah their leader, and on that day they offered great sacrifices and rejoiced because God had given them great joy, even the women and children rejoiced…” Purification is continuing. (v. 30) “The priests and the Levites purified themselves; they also purified the people, the gates and the wall.” (v. 45) “For they performed the worship of their God and the service of purification…” Peace is circulated. (v. 43b) “…the joy of Jerusalem was heard from afar.” What is our joy? A building? Some “blessing”? Is it Jesus? When its Jesus, the church will be dedicated……

Nehemiah: Chapter 11 Nehemiah 11:1-36 (read all verses…) “1 Now the leaders of the people lived in Jerusalem, but the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while nine-tenths remained in the other cities. 2 And the people blessed all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem. 3 Now these are the heads of the provinces who lived in Jerusalem, but in the cities of Judah each lived on his own property in their cities—the Israelites, the priests, the Levites, the temple servants and the descendants of Solomon's servants. 4 Some of the sons of Judah and some of the sons of Benjamin lived in Jerusalem…” “20 The rest of Israel, of the priests and of the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, each on his own inheritance. 21 But the temple servants were living in Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of the temple servants.” “22 Now the overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Mica, from the sons of Asaph, who were the singers for the service of the house of God. 23 For there was a commandment from the king concerning them and a firm regulation for the song leaders day by day.” What did they give? They gave up their possessions. (v. 3) “…but in the cities of Judah each lived on his own property in their cities…” “PROPERTY” Land, farm, crops, house, etc. “OWN” It was their own property. They were providing for themselves and their day to day lives were being taken care of by their crops and herds. They gave it up for something they would not own. In contrast, those in Jerusalem would need to more intentionally look to God to provide. (v. 20) “The rest of Israel, of the priests and of the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, each on his own inheritance.” “INHERITANCE” This indicates that the future of the ones in Jerusalem was given up as well. In contrast, the people that remained in their cities were able to rest at ease knowing their inheritance was secure. It was something they could see. Those in Jerusalem had to have faith. They had to trust that God would take care of their future. They gave up their protection. (v. 1) “…the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in Jerusalem…” The capital city, or “holy city” as it is referred to in the text, was not a safe place. Remember, it was only a month or two earlier that the entire city was a heap of rubble. Why? Because capital cities were the prime target of invading armies. The surrounding villages, towns and cities were typically left alone. Sure, they may have been raided but the people were often left with enough to continue on so that they could be raided again. The capital city, however, would be utterly destroyed. The protection that living outside of the city brought was suddenly removed when the people were drafted to live in Jerusalem. And some even volunteered! (v. 2) “…the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem…” They gave up their preferences. (v. 23) “…there was a commandment from the king concerning them and a firm regulation…” They had far more freedom of choice in their own villages and on their own property. What did they gain? They gained something better. (v. 1) “…the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while nine-tenths remained in the other cities.” Proverbs 16:33 “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.” Better preferences (God’s instead on mine) They gained spiritual barricades. Better protection. Job 1 & 2 / 1 Corinthians 10:13 They gained spiritual blessings. (v. 2) “And the people blessed all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.” (v. 20) “The rest of Israel … were in all the cities of Judah, each on his own inheritance.” Better possessions. Matthew 6:19-21 (store up treasures in heaven)…

Setting the Lord’s Table Our text is 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 [read the text] As we prepare for the Lord’s Supper, allow me to set the table by giving us some perspective on what it means to have communion in remembrance of Jesus. In Remembrance. The phrase is used twice by Jesus in our text… (v. 24) in regard to the bread He broke and blessed… “…do this in remembrance of Me.” (v. 25) And again when He took the cup as said… “…in remembrance of Me.” Remember who Jesus is. (v. 23) “…the Lord…the Lord Jesus…” The Son of God. The Spotless Lamb. The Savior of the world. Remember what Jesus did. (v. 24-25) “…My body…My blood…” Because of who Jesus is, what He did matters. He suffered for our sins. (beaten, bruised and bled) He satisfied the wrath of God. (fully and finally) He sealed a new covenant for us w/ His blood. Remember why Jesus did it. (v. 24) “…for you…” Because of His love for us. Because we were lost. Because we were helpless. Because we were dead in our sins. Because we were destined for destruction.…

Nehemiah Chapter 9 Intro: OT scholar, James Hamilton, said this about Nehemiah 9, “If you know the accumulation of your of your sin would pile up like all the dirty laundry you’ve ever soiled, like a bottomless sink full of dirty dishes, then the prayer in Nehemiah 9 will likely resonate with you.” Notice the Conviction of the people. What convicted them? God’s Word. Specifically, the OT Biblical Narrative… They were first convicted of their sin in Nehemiah 8 after Ezra read Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy to the people. Look back with me: Nehemiah 8:9-11 (NASB) “9 … "10 Then he said to them, "Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." 11 So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, "Be still, Who God is (vs.) Who they had been Who God is: (v. 5) “…O may Your glorious name be blessed And exalted above all blessing and praise…” (v. 6) “…You alone are the LORD…” (v. 7) “…You are the LORD God…” (v. 8) “…You are righteous…” (v. 17) “…But You are a God of forgiveness, Gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness…” (v. 31) “You are a gracious and compassionate God…” (v. 32) “…our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God…” Who they were: (v. 6) God’s creation (v. 16) arrogant & stubborn (v. 36) “…we are slaves today…” (v. 37) “…we are in great distress…” What God did (vs.) What they had done (v. 33) “…You are just in all that has come upon us; For You have dealt faithfully, but we have acted wickedly…” What God did to show Himself faithful and just: (v. 6) “…You have made the heavens, the heaven of heavens with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all of them…” AND (v. 31) “Nevertheless, in Your great compassion You did not make an end of them or forsake them, For You are a gracious and compassionate God.” In truth, (v. 33) describes God and who He is in relation to who we are too. Notice the Confession of the people. It addresses Past sin. The OT narrative that is summarized in (v. 16-31) It addresses Present sin. (v. 36) “…today…” It addresses National sin. (v. 34) “For our kings, our leaders, our priests and our fathers have not kept Your law or paid attention to Your commandments and Your admonitions with which You have admonished them…” (They are doing what God said in 2 Chronicles 7:14) It addresses Personal sin. (v. 36-37) “Behold, we are slaves today, and as to the land which You gave to our fathers to eat of its fruit and its bounty, Behold, we are slaves in it. Its abundant produce is for the kings Whom You have set over us because of our sins; They also rule over our bodies and over our cattle as they please, so we are in great distress.” Notice the Change of the people. It came with urgency. (v. 1) “Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the sons of Israel assembled with fasting, in sackcloth and with dirt upon them.” It came after conviction. Nehemiah 8 (the people weeping over sin) It came after confession. Nehemiah 9 (specific, detailed, full and complete) It came after commitment. (v. 38) “Now because of all this we are making an agreement in writing; And on the sealed document…” [public, “in writing”, accountable, serious]…

Introduction: Our time in Tennessee and Iowa over the past week…That is how we celebrated “Thanksgiving” this past week. It is good to have a day dedicated to Thanksgiving, but we need more than a day, a week a month or even a year to properly demonstrate Thanksgiving. We need to be “Living Thanksgiving” continuously. Why is “Living Thanksgiving” so important? Well, because it is God’s will for us… 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NASB) “…in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” If you are “in Christ Jesus” then “God’s will” is for you to “give thanks”, literally, “in everything”, all the time. ****God’s will for us is that we would be “Living Thanksgiving”. But what exactly is Thanksgiving? READ: According to Webster’s 1828 Dictionary, “Thanksgiving” is: “The act of rendering thanks or gratitude for favors or mercies. A public celebration of divine goodness; specifically, to acknowledge the goodness of God, either in remarkable deliverance from calamities or danger, or in the ordinary dispensation of His bounties.” “The act of rendering thanks or gratitude for favors or mercies…” Thanksgiving is an “act” (action) that we do or say in order to show “gratitude” for what God has done for us, namely, for His mercy, grace and provision. “A public celebration of divine goodness…” The act of Thanksgiving is to be done openly, fully and unashamedly in order to “celebrate” the goodness of who God is and declare the greatness of what God has done. So what does that look like? What does it look like when we are Living Thanksgiving? To answer that question, we will look to Isaiah, chapter 12. THE CONTEXT: Chp. 9 is a prophecy about Jesus (A child is born unto us…) Chp. 10 is a prophecy about God’s wrath being administered by the Assyrians. Chp. 11 is a prophecy about Jesus, calling Him the “branch” that “stems from Jessie”. When we get to chapter 12, God tells Isaiah why and how we are to be praising God for all His blessings that come to us through Christ Jesus, namely the salvation and peace that Jesus brings. In other words, chapter 12 tells us Christians how to be “Living Thanksgiving”. In fact, the NASB heading says “Thanksgiving Expressed” (***Read Isaiah 12***) 5 Reasons WHY we should be Living Thanksgiving continuously… i. Because of the WILL of God. (v. 1a: “Then you will say…”) see also 1 Thessalonians 5:18… “…in everything give thanks; for this is God's in Christ Jesus.” We are commanded to give thanks over 850x in the Bible (Rejoice, Praise, Celebrate, Shout…) Thanksgiving is commanded more than anything else! ii. Because of the WRATH of God. (v. 1b) "I will give thanks to You, O LORD; for although You were with me, Your …” John 3:36 “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the ” iii. Because of the WATER of God. (v. 2-3) “Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation. Therefore you will joyously draw .” John 4:10 “…If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living.” iv. Because of the WORKS of God. (v. 4) “…Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name. Make known His among the peoples…” Psalm 103:22 (NIV) “Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD, my soul.” (John 1:1-3 “all things came to be through Jesus”; Psalm 139 “knit together”; salvation & sanctification are God’s) v. Because of the WHEREABOUTS of God. (v. 6) “Cry aloud and shout for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great .” John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us…” (“2 or more gathered I am in their midst”) (Ephesians 3:17 Christ dwells in our hearts… 1 Corinthians 3:16 The Holy Spirit dwells inside us…) 3 Ways HOW to be Living Thanksgiving continuously, starting right now… i. Personally (v. 1-4a) “1 Then you will say on that day, "I will give thanks to You, O LORD; for although You were angry with , Your anger is turned away, and You comfort . 2 "Behold, God is , I will trust and not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is strength and song, and He has become ." 3 Therefore you will joyously draw water from the springs of salvation. 4 And in that day you will say…” (10x in the first 3 ½ vs. it is clear this is a personal call to Thanksgiving. Personal invitation. Individual expectation.) ii. Publicly (v. 4b-5) (so the “personally” is NOT privately) “4 …Make known His deeds among the peoples; make them remember that His name is exalted." 5 Praise the LORD in song, for He has done excellent things; let this be known throughout the earth.” iii. Purposefully (v. 4-5) (meaning to be intentionally obedient in an act of loving gratitude [John 14:15]) (v. 4) “Make known His deeds among the peoples; make them remember that His name is exalted.” (v. 5) “…let this be known throughout the earth…” ***(point them to Matthew 28 & Acts 1:8)*** It is time to start Living Thanksgiving! Don’t wait around for a holiday, “This is the day the Lord has made…” 1st step? Living a Life Thanksgiving starts by responding appropriately to the gift God gives through Christ Jesus……

Nehemiah Chapter 8 Chapters 1-6: Rebuilding the City Chapter 7: Recapping the Construction Chapters 8-13: Rebuilding the Community (Prayer & the Preaching of the word) The Unraveling power of God’s word. (v. 9) “…all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the law.” (v. 11) “…the Levites calmed all the people, saying, ‘Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.’” 2 Corinthians 7:10 (NIV) “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” Psalm 51:17 (CSB) “The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit…” Hebrews 4:12 (MSG) “God means what he says. What he says goes. His powerful Word is sharp as a surgeon's scalpel, cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense, laying us open to listen and obey.” The Uplifting power of God’s word. (v. 12) “All the people went away to eat, to drink, to send portions and to celebrate a great festival, because they understood the words which had been made known to them.” Psalm 119:28 (NASB) “My soul weeps because of grief; Strengthen me according to Your word.” (v. 17) “…there was great rejoicing.” (v. 18) “He read from the book of the law of God daily, from the first day to the last day. And they celebrated the feast seven days…” Psalm 19:8 (NASB) “The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart…” Psalm 119:111 (CSB) “I have your decrees as a heritage forever; indeed, they are the joy of my heart.” Psalm 119:162 (CSB) “I rejoice over your promise like one who finds vast treasure.” The Unifying power of God’s word. (v. 1) “And all the people gathered at the square which was in front of the Water Gate, and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the LORD had given to Israel.” (v. 2) “…Then Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly of men, women and all who could listen with understanding…” (v. 3) “…in the presence of men and women, those who could understand…” (v. 3, 5, 5, 6, 9, 9, 11, 12, 13 [9x]) “…all the people…” (v. 13) “…were gathered to Ezra the scribe that they might gain insight into the words of the law.” (v .17) “…The entire assembly of those who had returned from the captivity…” (42,000+ from chp. 8) Acts 2:41-47 (NASB) “41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. 42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; 45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. 46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.” To experience the power of God’s word… We must Hunger for the Word. (v. 1) (v. 1) “…they asked Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the LORD had given to Israel.” Psalm 119:20 (NIV) “My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times.” 1 Peter 2:2 (NASB) “…like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation…” (v. 3) “…from early morning until midday…” They were not just hungry but very hungry.” We must Honor the Word. (v. 2-5) (v. 3) “…and all the people were attentive to the book of the law.” (Paying attention, actively listening…) (v. 5) “Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up.” (Respect and Reverence for the word) (v. 3 & 7) “…from early morning until midday…” & “…the Levites, explained the law to the people while the people remained in their place.” (Commitment and Devotion) We must Heed the Word. (v. 14, 16-18a) “14 They found written in the law how the LORD had commanded through Moses that the sons of Israel should live in booths during the feast of the seventh month… 16 So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at the Water Gate and in the square at the Gate of Ephraim. 17 The entire assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in them. The sons of Israel had indeed not done so from the days of Joshua the son of Nun to that day. And there was great rejoicing. 18 He read from the book of the law of God daily, from the first day to the last day…” There is a difference between hearing and heeding. Jeremiah 13:15 (NASB) “Listenand give heed, do not be haughty, For the LORD has spoken.” Proverbs 10:17 (NASB) “He is on the path of life who heeds instruction, But he who ignores reproof goes astray.” James 1:22 (NIV) “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” We must Herald the Word. (v. 15) (v. 15) “So they proclaimed and circulated a proclamation in all their cities and in Jerusalem..” Psalm 126:6 “He who goes to and fro weeping, carrying his bag of seed, Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.” Isaiah 55:10-11 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; 11 So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”…

Nehemiah Chapter 7 God cares about your work. (v. 1) “Now when the wall was rebuilt and I had set up the doors…” Chapters 1-6 are the work of rebuilding the city. This chapter lets us know specifically the people that did the work. *Work is given to us, by God, as a blessing. Genesis 2:15 “…the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.” *Our work should be done for God’s glory. Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men…” *1 Timothy 5:8 (NASB) “…if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” God cares about your walk. In “the Purpose Driven Life”, Rick Warren said, “God is more interested in your character than your comfort. God is more interested in making your life holy than He is in making your life happy.” (v. 2) “…then I put Hanani my brother, and Hananiah the commander of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem, for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many.” Why were these men put in charge? Because of their walks. Their lives demonstrated integrity and reverence, “…a faithful man and feared God more than many…”. Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Ephesians 5:15-16 “…be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:13 “…all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.” Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you…” God cares about your wealth. (v. 68- 72) “68 Their horses were 736; their mules, 245; 69 their camels, 435; their donkeys, 6,720. 70 Some from among the heads of fathers' households gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 gold drachmas, 50 basins, 530 priests' garments. 71 Some of the heads of fathers' households gave into the treasury of the work 20,000 gold drachmas and 2,200 silver minas. 72 That which the rest of the people gave was 20,000 gold drachmas and 2,000 silver minas and 67 priests' garments.” Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 “…he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. God cares about your worship. (v. 1) “Now when the wall was rebuilt and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed…” Deuteronomy 6:13-15 “13 You shall fear only the LORD your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name. 14 You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you, 15 for the LORD your God in the midst of you is a jealous God; otherwise the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth.” God cares about your well-being. (v. 3)“Then I said to them, "Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot, and while they are standing guard, let them shut and bolt the doors. Also appoint guards from the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his post, and each in front of his own house.’” Isaiah 53:5 “…He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.” [*God cares so much about our well-being that He pierced, crushed, chastised and scourged His own so that our well-being could be achieved*]…
