This week, Jo and her guest, Julie McGue, explore how important identity and a sense of belonging are to us all, the role of both nature and nurture as we shape our sense of self and Julie's quest to find her birth parents at the age of 48. Julie Ryan McGue is an author, a domestic adoptee, and an identical twin. She writes extensively about finding out who you are, where you belong, and making sense of it. Julie’s debut award winning memoir Twice a Daughter: A Search for Identity, Family, and Belonging (She Writes Press) came out in May 2021. It is the story of her five-year search for birth relatives. Her weekly blogs That Girl, This Life and monthly column at The Beacher focus on identity, family, and life’s quirky moments.
About the Midlife and Beyond Podcast.
Like all transitions, midlife can be messy and sad and glorious all at once, leaving many midlife women feeling rather alone and somewhat invisible. But what does this transition we are experiencing lead to?
I'm Jo Blackwell, a photographer, author and coach for women who want more from their lives post 50, and I'm here to remind you that if we manage our health and embrace it, growing older can lead to one of the greatest periods of growth and transformation of our lives.
The Midlife Movement was created to change minds about midlife and growing older, one story at a time. Because we only become invisible when when we stop seeing ourselves. email jo@joblackwell.co.uk to take part in the podcast or suggest guests.

The New Old: Redefining Aging in the 21st Century In today's world, growing older isn't what it used to be. We now expect a longer, more active life than our parents' and grandparents' generations. This episode dives into how the stages of life have evolved over the past century and introduces two thought leaders, Chip Conley and Barbara Waxman, who have reshaped how we view aging. Covering how life expectancy has shifted from the early 1900s to now, how adolescence was discovered, and why midlife is no longer just a pit stop. We discuss "Middlescence," a new life stage that mirrors adolescence but in reverse, and how this transitional period can help us prepare for a fulfilling second half of life. Whether you're in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, this video offers empowering insights on how to embrace midlife and beyond. Discover the concept of wisdom workers, the importance of mentorship, and why aging in the 21st century is more about growing whole than growing old. 💡 Join the conversation: Share your memories of your parents' or grandparents' aging journey on the MIdlife and Beyond YouTube channel 📺 Watch the TED Talks mentioned in the video: Chip Conley and Barbara Waxman Please browse my website , where you can buy my books, and subscribe to my Newsletter for free resources.…
