FACING CANCER Karateka Gavin Mulholland interviewed by Mick Tully
In June 2022 respected Karateka Gavin Mulholland, 7th Dan Daigaku Karate Kai, discovered that he had Cancer.
What he did next and how he faced it are the measure of the man and his martial art journey. His very open, honest, tough and personal account is compelling.
Found out how he discovered his illness? Did he know he was not well? His treatment would be gruelling, a daily dose of chemotherapy and radiotherapy over 6 weeks.
How does an active martial artist react to being very ill, to the loss of a physical sense of self? How did he decide to document his treatment? What were the most awful times? What were the high points? How did his body try and stop him?
Would he change what happened? How did the martial arts community react? Did his martial training help him cope with the worst moments, and the physical challenges?
How did he respond to the endless, well meaning advice and health tips?
He says what he did, what happened, how he faced it all, and how he is facing an uncertain future.
Cancer is devastating beyond the illness itself and any treatment, and it affects the ability to work and pay the bills.
