In this podcast you'll get to practice with phrasal forms of the verb to come. There are a lot of them so let's get started.
1. Come with = come along
John and I are going to see a movie tonight. Do you want to come with us?
2. Come upon = find
While exploring the woods near our house, we came upon a wooden chest full of rubies and emeralds. Pirate treasure!
3. Come up with = think of
My boss is a genius. He comes up with great ideas every day.
4. Come up to = approach
Always slow down when you come up to a railroad crossing.
5. Come up = rise above the horizon
The sun comes up in the morning and goes down at night. You can also say it rises and sets.
6. Come up = get near in time
The first day of school is coming up next week. How exciting!
7. Come up = appear
When the drunk driver came up before the judge, he was sentenced to a year in prison.
8. Come up = happen, occur
Please call me if any job openings come up at the company where you work.
9. Come up = happen, usually unexpectedly
Unless something comes up with my kids, I’ll be at work by 9am.
10. Come up = approach
I was waiting for the light to turn green so I could cross the street when a guy came up and asked me for money.
11. Come under = be subjected to
The boss put me in charge of training new workers, so all the new people now come under my authority.
12. Come under = come underneath something
Robert opened his umbrella and told me to come under it to stay dry.
13. Come under = classified under
His boss's meetings were always long and boring, so Michael said they came under the heading “Complete waste of time.”
14. Come to = in regard to
When it comes to baking cakes, she’s the best in our family.
15. Come to = happen to
Please be very careful. I don’t want you to come to harm.
16. Come to = get to
That’s a good question. We’ll come to it in a little while.
17. Come to = total
After I bought a new phone, and headphones, and insurance, and a case, it came to almost seven hundred dollars.
18. Come through with = provide something needed
The university bookstore finally came through with our physics textbook.
19. Come through = succeed
Some day Colombia will come through and win the World Cup. Maybe!
20. Come through = survive
The Johnson family was lucky to come through the hurricane alive.
